Why Pinterest Should Be Your Long-Term Podcast Strategy

Yesterday’s interview with Presh Rodgers is one of my absolute favorites because it was chock-full of so many amazing tips on how to optimize your Pinterest account to get more listeners for your podcast.

If you haven’t already listened to that episode, grab a pen and some paper and do that first. Then come back here and we’ll talk some more about my Pinterest journey and why Pinterest should be part of your long-term podcast strategy.

Pinterest is your long-term podcast strategy

The success of your podcast depends on both short-term and long-term strategies. Short-term strategies include platforms like Instagram that get your podcast immediate, but short-lived, exposure (if you want some tips on how to get new listeners from Instagram, check out this episode from Season One). Pinterest is a piece of your long-term strategy. While it’s often mislabeled as a social media platform, it’s actually a search engine like Google or YouTube. The native search engine on Pinterest will drive traffic to your podcast for a long time into the future if you optimize your keywords. Just like with Google, it can take up to six months to see results from your efforts but once the algorithm knows you exist, it will keep working for you.

Just like when you think about SEO for your show notes so that Google can find your content, think of the keywords for Pinterest. What is a person going to search for and how can you help them?  Think about your topic and what problem you are solving. This can be different for every episode. What I like to do is have some general keywords that relate to the overall theme of my podcast, such as “podcasting” or “podcasting tips” and then I also have some keywords that are more specific per episode, like “monetizing your podcast”.

Use the keywords in the description, in the title, and also on the image. The image is important because Pinterest is a visual platform. Presh gave an example of when she was searching for money tips and came across an image with the F.I.R.E. acronym. She disregarded it, thinking it had nothing to do with her search, but the content was actually exactly what she was looking for. Keep that in mind when designing your pins.

If you just spend a few minutes every week on your SEO and Pinterest keywords, that means in the future, you will have less work to do. There will be more eyes on your podcast and you don’t have to be as present on Instagram anymore because your SEO is doing the hard work in the background. Check out this previous episode for more tips on how to create continuous leads through your SEO.

How Pinterest fits into your funnel

Another thing that is really important with Pinterest is to think through the user’s journey. If someone finds you on Pinterest, it’s likely a cold lead that found your content based on a keyword search. They don’t know you or your podcast. If your pin links them to that episode’s blog post page, they still aren’t learning anything about you unless you introduce yourself. To address this, I’ve added a sidebar on my website where I introduce myself, my podcast, and my business. I also tell them what next steps they can take, like downloading my ebook.

Look at the bigger picture when outlining your Pinterest strategy. Of course, you want more listeners, but why do you want new listeners? What is the next step that you want your new listener to take? How can you help turn this cold lead into a warm lead using Pinterest with all of the amazing tips Presh has provided?

Believe it or not, Presh has even more tips to share about Pinterest so I’m having her back next season to talk about paid Pinterest ads. It’s going to be jammed packed with tips just like this one so make sure to tune in for that episode. As a side note, this is the last episode of Season Two. Not to worry, I’m taking a quick break to put together a lot more amazing content for you and will be back on April 6th with Season 3. See you soon!
