How to determine if your podcast is profitable

To say that you have a profitable podcast, you need to first determine what is your break-even point. To do this, you need to add up all of your expenses to produce and market your show. You also need to factor in your time. Even if you outsourced the majority of your podcast production, you can’t outsource recording the episode. So factor that into your total.

The reason why I mention accounting for your time is because if you spend hours and hours creating your podcast and then aren’t generating a profit from your podcast, then your business may benefit from spending your time in another way.

My secret to efficiently producing this podcast

One thing that works really well for me is to work in seasons. I am a huge fan of seasons because it saves me so much time. First of all, it gives me an excuse to take a break from releasing new episodes. Each season, I have 22 episodes over 11 weeks. After that, I take a break for a few weeks depending on how busy I am.

Another reason I like working in seasons is because it’s great for batch recording. This is a huge time saver for me because I don’t record a new episode every week. I create a list of topics I want to record for the next season and when I’m ready, I record 3 or 4 or 5 episodes in a day. That means I can get a full season recorded in less than a week. Then I can even batch produce show notes and audiograms. It’s a huge time saver!

The key to saving time marketing your podcast

Repurpose your content. I can’t stress this enough. If you’re not repurposing your content, you’re spending too much time creating new content that you don’t need to. The content is already there, so use it.

Repurposing content isn’t limited to new episodes. I love going back to older episodes when creating new email broadcasts or Instagram captions. Most podcast content is evergreen for a while so listeners do not care when the original release date was. Take advantage and get some new traffic to older episodes while saving yourself time.
