Common mistake #1. Not having a reserve of episodes in the can

When you have a new podcast, you’re super excited. You start recording some episodes, but then things take a turn. Maybe your download numbers are not what you expected. Maybe life happens and suddenly your podcast drops on the priority list. You stop recording new episodes and tell yourself you’ll be back soon. Maybe.

I think this happens to more than half of podcasters. So if this is you, you are not alone but I’m here to tell you how you can do things differently. What I have seen work well for both my clients and myself is to have several recorded episodes ready to go at all times. I usually record two months in advance so that if my business gets really busy for a few weeks or even a month, my show doesn’t stop and I can give my business the attention that it needs.

If I have extra time, I’ll schedule more interviews or record solo episodes so that I don’t have to record an episode every single week during the podcast season. It’s already done and scheduled for release no matter what else comes up. Take the extra pressure off of yourself by having several episodes in the can.

Common mistake #2. Growing your audience before thinking about monetization

It’s completely natural to focus on your stats, but don’t let the numbers hold you back from monetizing your show. I want large numbers as much as anyone else, but the thing is, it doesn’t really matter. You don’t need a huge audience to monetize your podcast.

It’s important to focus on the people that are listening, even if it’s only 10 people because those are 10 potential new clients. Focusing on those people is very valuable. That’s not to say you should be selling something on your first episode, but instead that you should think about how you will monetize your podcast before releasing your first episode.

If you focus on the number of downloads before starting to monetize, you’re leaving money on the table and you’re also not fully serving your audience. If you can sell something to your audience that helps them even further in the thing that you do, then you’re serving your audience. That’s a win-win.

Common mistake #3. Overcomplicating your processes

I was definitely guilty of this mistake when I started out. Waiting for the stars to align is unproductive. Things will never be perfect so you’ll still be here not doing the thing you want to do or not monetizing your podcast if you’re waiting for things to be just right.

New podcasters get preoccupied with having the “right” equipment, which can be pricey. Sure, it would be nice if you have a microphone, but if you don’t have the funds to buy one right now, then start recording on your phone. If you don’t have money to invest in a website, add that later on.

When thinking about monetizing your podcast, you don’t need to offer 1:1 services, group coaching, and an ebook all at the same time. Start with one offer and go from there. If you get a lot of questions from your audience around the same topic, create a product that answers that question and then build on that. The important thing is to have a plan for how you will grow and improve over time.
