You’re The Boss; Owning Your Decisions Makes You A Better Podcaster

There are a lot of questions that come to mind when you are a podcaster, especially when you’re just beginning.

This week I spoke to D’Ana Joi Spencer, and we spoke about how to stay focused when you’re a multi-passionate podcaster or entrepreneur. And this involves making decisions. Sometimes, we get so overwhelmed that we end up having a hard time really deciding.

In this episode, I would like to talk about making decisions. How to seek advice but still make a choice based on your gut feeling and what you think is right. And why you need to own your decisions.

It’s Your Choice…

A lot of podcasters ask me questions. Questions like should I do a rebrand? Should I change the name of my podcast? How do I market this? These are only some of the questions I’ve heard. The truth is you can do anything you want because it’s your podcast. I’m not saying this because I want to overwhelm you, I’m saying this because I want to empower you. I want you to take responsibility and use it to your advantage.

But although I can’t tell you exactly what to do, I am here to give you advice, give suggestions. For example, you only do solo episodes because you’re not comfortable doing interviews. And if you want to expand and grow, I will suggest that you have interviews. But if it’s not really something that you would like to do, don’t do it. What’s important is you listen to your instinct, find what works for you. If you feel that the advice you heard is not in alignment with your goals, find another solution that works for your podcast.

Ask Your Audience

Now, if you’re still feeling lost, one tip I can give you is to ask your audience. They listen to your podcast and they might be able to give you insights and opinions. But remember that the most important opinion is still yours. They are there to give opinions, and who knows you might find the answer from them. But ultimately the answer relies on you.

Own Your Decisions

The most important advice as I’ve mentioned is to listen to your instinct, listen to your gut. Because most of the time, your instinct is telling you the right choice. You don’t need someone to tell you what to do. What you need to do is to learn to make your own decisions and stand by them. Because those decisions will make you grow. If you choose the right choice good for you, and if you made a mistake and chose the wrong one, I still believe that’s good. Why? Because that will definitely teach you a lesson, and you become better because of it.

So yes, seek advice but don’t let anyone dictate what you should do. Listen to yourself, listen to your gut, and own those decisions. Have fun and enjoy the process. That’s what podcasting is all about.
