How To Stay Focused As A Multi-passionate Podcaster?

Being in a world of podcasting means you might be multi-passionate or have multiple things to do. You could be an entrepreneur, a parent, an artist, and a whole lot more. And sometimes, when you have a lot of things on your plate, focus can become a problem.

In her twenties, D’Ana Joi Spencer once struggled with choosing what she wanted to do. But Joi was a multi-passionate person, and several options were in front of her. Instead of choosing one thing to do, she chose herself. She decided that she wasn’t going to choose, she could be anything she wants to be. Since then, she has been on a mission to rewrite the narrative. Choosing one thing is not the only path to success, you can be multifaceted and multi-passionate and still be successful.  .

In this episode, Joi shares with us how to stay focused as a multi-passionate creative. How her three part focus framework can help align your goals, get things done, and leave you accomplished at the same time. Definitely a method podcasters need, to stay focused and productive.

In this episode:

[01:55] Joi struggled with choosing what she wanted to do in her twenties.

[02:28] She decided to choose herself and decided to start a blog to express all her interests.

[02:58] After getting a positive response, Joi offered her services to coach fellow creatives and multi-passionate people. Eventually expanding to memberships and courses.

[04:35] She has been employed and ventured into different jobs before focusing on her blog, then her business.

[08:40] Joi created a three part focus framework that finds balance between doing a lot of different things and focusing.

[09:27] The first type of focus is called Intensive Focus, which creates clarity.

[11:40] The second type of focus is Active Focus, in other words being productive or taking action.

[12:37] Non-stop active focus can lead to burnout.

[13:54] The third part of the framework is Passive Focus, which simply means taking breaks.

[14:42] The more we give ourselves breaks on a day to day basis, the more we normalize the idea that it’s okay to pause. – Joi

[17:31] This framework is helpful for podcasters.

[18:09] In starting her podcast, Joi used the framework to focus on her projects and finishing them.

[18:48] The framework was born from observing her process, looking back on what was working and realizing she can teach this to others.

[19:27] Creating seasons to focus.

[23:34] The first season of Joi’s podcast is all about focus.

[24:41] For people who want to dive into the framework, Joi has an e-book that you can start learning from.
